VWS4LS

In the VWS4LS project, KUKA is working with other partners to implement a management shell in the automobile.

The new funded project is about the implementation of a management shell as an interoperable digital twin for development, production and assembly of the wiring harness in the automobile along the value chain.

The wiring harness (often referred to as "cable harness" or "on-board network") is one of the most expensive components in the automobile. Despite mass production in the automotive industry, the wiring harness is a one-off. In the meantime, various trends in the automotive sector are forcing the consistent automation of value-added processes. In the VWS4LS project, which is funded by the BMWK, digital information on each wiring harness is completed as a digital twin, based on "management shell" technology. The development and optimization of a wiring harness covers its entire life cycle, from engineering to production and assembly.

KUKA is working with eight other partners to achieve the project goals. KUKA focuses on the creation of product and process descriptions, in particular the product description of the wiring harness in the form of management shells including the associated CAD data. We are also responsible for deriving robot movements required for individual production from the corresponding information in the management shells.
