KUKA in the UK

In the United Kingdom, KUKA operates from three locations in the West Midlands – Wednesbury, Halesowen, and Redditch. Each of these locations represents a KUKA division. In addition to sharing a region, the three locations have one other thing in common: their passion for KUKA as a company and its technological innovation.

KUKA Robotics

In the Robotics division, the focus lies on the core component for automation, the robot. Robotics develops, assembles and sells industrial and service robots together with robot controllers, software and services.

KUKA Systems

The Systems division offers its customers customized solutions for production processes. In 1994, KUKA Systems acquired machine manufacturer Thompson Friction Welding (UK), helping KUKA become one of the global market leaders in this field. The friction welding machines can be used to manufacture components for a range of industries.

The KUKA philosophy

In addition to our UK offices, KUKA employs around 14,000 people in more than 30 countries. The closeness of the locations in the UK means we can work collaboratively towards our common goal of shaping the future through automation.

Despite the size of the business, KUKA has the characteristics of a medium-sized company. The company’s hierarchies are flat and responsibility at KUKA rests with a wide range of individuals. KUKA has been successfully making its mark as a global player since the mid-1990s.

Tradition meets innovation

The development of KUKA as a company has been remarkable: founded in 1898 by Johann Josef Keller and Jakob Knappich as the Augsburg Acetylene Factory, the company is now the market leader in the production of industrial robots and automated systems and plants.

Today, we are a globally known organisation, and have offered our insights in Industry 4.0 to world-known figures like Angela Merkel and Barack Obama. Our primary shareholder, Midea, recently took its ownership stake in KUKA to almost 95% in a move seen not only as a great boost for the business, but also a major vote of confidence in our future prospects.

KUKA success story:  Area Sales Manager, Midlands, Jonathan Pick

It’s been seven years since I first joined KUKA, and what a journey it’s been. Since leaving Birmingham City University at 21, I feel I've come a long way, and really developed as an individual, largely owing to KUKA's investment in me as an individual and valued staff member.

My exposure to KUKA came via our Manging Director, Jeff Nowill, who introduced to the company and the world of robotics and automation. I was initially nervous as I was new to the industry, but the support and learnings I was given, helped me understand the product and company structure and operations, which were exemplary. This gave me a great platform to develop and build confidence within my role.

My first role for KUKA was as a Customer Service Consultant. I would regularly meet with customers to ensure they had all they needed and were suitably supported, promoting KUKA's after sales service packages, training, and maintenance contracts. I gained experience dealing with customers while also selling the KUKA products and developing a thorough understanding of robotics.

In the past, I have been told you don’t come to work to make friends, but at KUKA you can’t help it – everyone is so friendly and keen to see you develop

Jonathan Pick, Customer Service Consultant at KUKA

Today, I’m the Midlands Area Sales Manager and UK Sector Manager for Machine Tending. I now work with our system integrators and end customers, helping to develop automated solutions. The variety of industries KUKA operates in is vast, so the applications I see on a day-to-day basis vary a great way to learn and understand the industry.

It is really exciting to be part of a company that is focused on the future and recognises the hidden potential in people that can help drive the business forward. Robotics is the future, and I feel proud to be part of that evolution. My passion has only grown as my role has progressed, especially when working with big-name customers.

KUKA has a family feel, where everyone makes you feel welcome and part of the team. Nothing is ever too much trouble, even for senior managers, and that makes you feel appreciated. In the past, I have been told you don’t come to work to make friends, but at KUKA you can’t help it – everyone is so friendly and keen to see you develop. I’m excited to see what the future holds for me at KUKA and am delighted to be part of such a fantastic organisation.
