KMP 600-S diffDrive: new avenues for intralogistics

A compact powerhouse meeting the highest safety requirements: the KMP 600-S diffDrive expands KUKA’s portfolio of mobile platforms. At up to two meters per second, the KMP 600-S diffDrive is fast and, thanks to laser scanners and 3D object detection, safe in equal measure.

The collision-free coworker takes intralogistics to a new level – especially in the consumer goods industry

The requirements for mobile solutions in industry are extremely high. Thanks to the KUKA KMP 600-S diffDrive mobile platform, there is now a new automated guided vehicle system that provides high-speed support for production intralogistics with a payload of up to 600 kilograms. At the same time, the KMP 600-S diffDrive is ideally equipped for the tough everyday environment of industrial production: Its IP 54 design enables it to always work reliably even under adverse conditions – such as where water spray and dust are present.

Maximum safety, maximum flexibility

All KUKA mobile platforms guarantee employees maximum freedom of movement without the need for safety fencing. The KMP 600-S diffDrive is no exception. A laser scanner in the main direction of motion monitors the area in front of the platform. Optionally, the platform can be equipped with a second scanner at the rear for high speeds during backward motion when cycle times require it. “Safety is a central concern for us,” says Jakob Brandl, portfolio manager at KUKA. “That’s why there are eight safety zones at both the front and rear of the KMP 600-S diffDrive that customers can customize to tailor them to the speed of the vehicle and the application.”

Interfaces for any requirement

It will also be possible to expand the KMP 600-S diffDrive with 3D object detection later this year. This will allow it to detect obstacles that are between 30 millimeters and four meters above the ground. The KMP 600-S diffDrive can link a wide variety of workstations, thus providing precisely the load handling options the customer requires. For example, it acts as a top-load AGV (automated guided vehicle) and can lift pallets or cartons up to 60 millimeters via the integrated lifting device. Alternatively, it can be equipped with a conveyor belt

KUKA.NavigationSolution for navigation and fleet management

Start-up of the KMP 600-S diffDrive is carried out via a wireless controller and applications can be programmed via JAVA. Each KMP 600-S diffDrive has an operating time of around eight hours and can be recharged in one and a half hours. KUKA.NavigationSolution monitors the entire fleet: it detects the battery charge level and which vehicles are connected to the WLAN. After initial teaching of the environment by means of the SLAM algorithm, the software solution takes over the localization in space (on the vehicle itself) as well as the coordination of the vehicles (on a central computer). Using parameters such as distance and speed, the fleet manager determines the best route on the network of paths – avoiding all collisions of course.
