Under extreme temperatures and humidity, things got intense – particularly in the final laps – during the first E-Prix in the vacation paradise on the southern Chinese island of Hainan.
From a starting position of fourth, Audi driver Daniel Abt fought his way into the leader group for podium contention – until the safety car came onto the track and the race was interrupted with a red flag. He ultimately finished the race in fifth place and thus took home points in the sixth E-Prix of the season as well.
Lucas di Grassi taken out of race by collision caused by competitor
For teammate Lucas di Grassi, the race ended early. After initially working his Audi e-tron FE05 forward from a tenth-place starting position into sixth place immediately behind Abt, a collision caused by Sébastien Buemi took him out in the second to last lap.
“That was extremely frustrating because we could have taken the lead in the championship today,” the Brazilian said.
