KUKA and Formula E

KUKA is partnering with the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team in the international motor sport series for electric cars, the FIA Formula E.

The Formula E racing calendar – 2019/2020

There will be a total of 14 races in the 2019/2020 season. They will be held in twelve major cities on five different continents. Here you will find an overview of the races that have already been run, the current races and future races. Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi from the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team will be challenging the world tour with their Audi e-tron FE06.

Season start 2019/20

After the difficult beginning to the season, Lucas di Grassi and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler impressively came back: the Brazilian celebrated second position in Diriyah. Daniel Abt also scored the sixth position with valuable points.

Formula E – exciting and innovative

Formula E, which was launched in September 2014, is the first exclusively electrical racing series and has managed to establish itself as an appealing motor sport event for a wide audience in only a short space of time and to inspire the best drivers, teams and manufacturers from around the world.

The racing series provides a competitive environment for the automotive industry in terms of promoting the development of electric cars. Audi's e-tron FE-06 is a good example of a racing car that has been developed into a standard vehicle. The races are held around the globe in the city centers of major cities. In this way, electromobility is showcased where it will be utilized in the future: in the urban environment.

What's more, fans of the racing series are able to make an impact on the races in a completely new way: they can give their favorite driver around 70 hp of additional power for a few seconds using the FanBoost. Unparalleled!

Formula E is perfectly suited to our competence in the areas automotive, eMobility and battery sectors. This is how KUKA has supported the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team since March 2017 as a partner and sponsor; the two companies having the common aspiration to give their best at all times: Peak performance.

FanBoost

The FanBoost in Formula E is unparalleled in motor sport. It allows spectators and fans to play an active role in the outcome of the race by enabling them to vote for their favorite driver and award them with extra power for the race.

The five drivers with the most votes receive 100 kJ of additional energy each. This additional energy can be used in the second half of the race in a 5-second window. During this window, the power of the racing car increases briefly from 200 kW (272 hp) to 250 kW (340 hp).

Voting begins six days prior to an E-Prix on a Monday at 5:30 p.m. local time and closes 15 minutes after the race has begun. Once the voting window has elapsed, Formula E announces the results during the live broadcast of the race.

Making the difference in Formula E race cars.

The car essentially consists of two main pieces. – One is the same for every manufacturer. That’s the chassis and also the battery. And then for us, in Audi, all of the development we do is on the electric motor, gear box, the rear suspension. So effectively the electric drivetrain – The power delivery. And there we’re now working on several items of performance: One is that we always want to reduce the weight and size. That allows a better exhilaration, but also less mas to move. So it’s better for the energy management.
