Audi e-tron FE05

Now that the Formula E teams have driven the same car for four years, season 5 begins with the “Gen2” next generation and showcases the progress in electromobility.

Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi present their new company car for the fifth Formula E season: the Audi e-tron FE05

The Audi e-tron FE05 is based on the new common chassis for FIA Formula E and is the successor to the successful FE04 model from the 2017/2018 season. A purebred, fully electric racing car on a mission to defend the title in the fifth Formula E season.

Efficient powertrain, developed by Audi and Schaeffler

The core element is the combination of the motor and transmission, which were jointly developed by Audi and technology partner Schaeffler. While the chassis and the battery pack are the same for all teams, each manufacturer can develop the electric motor and power electronics for themselves. The power output, however, is regulated: during practice and with FanBoost, the motor’s output is 250 kW; during the race, it is 200 kW; and in Attack Mode, 225 kW are available for a limited amount of time.

More power: the battery now is sufficient for an entire race. The Audi e-tron FE05 draws current from a 374-kilogram battery from McLaren Applied Technologies. The lithium ion battery has a capacity of 52 kWh, instead of the mere 28 kWh used in the preseason. This has brought about a significant change: whereas the previous model called for a vehicle swap half way through the race, the cars now can complete the entire race of 45 minutes plus an additional lap using only one battery.

As the tire supplier of Formula E, Michelin provides all-weather tires which are designed for sustainability and typically last through the full racing day. These 18-inch tires – a common size found on cars – were selected for the racing cars in order to facilitate the transfer of developments in Formula E into series production.

Technology transfer – Learning for series production.

In terms of the further development of e-mobility, the knowledge that mechanics, developers and engineers acquire in Formula E is extremely valuable. Formula E thus helps to understand technology and to set new standards in the development of innovative technologies.

The findings that engineers uncover in the harsh competitive environment of Formula E flow directly into the development of future electric drives for series production. Racing enables the testing of new materials, technologies and working methods under extreme conditions – without regard for the limiting factors.

At the beginning of Formula E, engineers from electric vehicle development built the racing cars for Formula E – in other words, there was a technology transfer from the streets to the race track. The direction here has now been reversed.
