PeTRA

The shortage of skilled nursing staff is increasing steadily. Together with partners, KUKA is researching solutions for the care sector.

Robot support in care

The PeTRA research project investigates the use of a robot assistant in nursing. Human-technology interaction shall take over the transfer of persons and relieve the nursing staff.

The shortage of skilled workers poses a great challenge to society. The skilled personnel can hardly cope with the many tasks in nursing. This overburdens employees and can reduce the quality of care. In a research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), scientists are working on the integration of a robot into everyday nursing care. The aim is to develop a robotic support solution for patient logistics.

The mobility of patients will be expanded in several stages. These range from the autonomy of a wheelchair, to that of a rollator, to the support of a patient walking freely. The technical solution provides for a mobile robot system with a collaborative lightweight robot. This serves as an input device for the patient.

Care situation before and after

The technical assistant is available at any time of day or night. The PeTRA system is designed to relieve nursing staff of the time-consuming task of transporting people - for qualified care while at the same time relieving the strain on staff. Free time can be used for the care of patients and for the recovery of qualified personnel.
