Lucas di Grassi celebrates his spectacular win in Mexico
Three in a row for Audi: for the third consecutive time, the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team won the E-Prix in Mexico. In front of a full crowd in the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Lucas di Grassi captured his ninth Formula E victory with a heart-stopping maneuver in a dramatic photo finish.
The efficiency of the fully electric Audi e-tron FE05 was decisive during the win in Mexico. While his direct rivals were forced to manage their energy supplies as they raced toward the line in the final lap, the Audi driver was able to remain in full attack mode until the end and pull off a spectacular maneuver to overtake the Mahindra driven by Pascal Wehrlein, the leader throughout the race, just before the finish line. The Brazilian had already muscled second place away from Nissan driver Oliver Rowland prior to that.
That was probably the best race of my Formula E career!
With his first win of the season, di Grassi improved to fourth place in the overall Formula E rankings. After 4 of the 13 races in the electric racing series, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler is in fifth place in the team rankings. View the full race results and the overall rankings here.
Di Grassi’s teammate, Daniel Abt, also had a strong race. After a small mistake during qualifying, last year’s winner had to start the race in last place. Over the 45 laps, the German fought his way back from a starting position of 21st to end up tenth and thus back into point contention in the season’s fourth race.
The next Formula E race – the 50th E-Prix in the history of the electric racing series – will take place on 10 March in Hong Kong.
