Grind Master transforms foundries with KUKA robots

Grind Master, a global leader in metal finishing and deburring machines, has become an integrator for KUKA starting January 2016. The small robots of the KR AGILUS series in its portfolio deflash die-cast aluminium components with high consistency and quality. While lowering overall costs, the solution has also increased productivity and quality.

In January 2016, the Aurangabad-based metal machine company Grind Master has introduced KUKA robots into their portfolio as an integrator. The small robot KR AGILUS sixx is used in applications to deflash die-cast aluminium components, specifically visible Class A parts in automobiles, scooters and motorcycles. A high quality finish is needed there to meet the demand of very high consistency for those parts.

KUKA robots provide excellent consistency in quality

Before, deflashing shops mainly depended on casual manual labor. But temperatures, fumes and dust as well as the high quality requirements made a change necessary. The robot solution was chosen over a linear portal because of the flexibility needed to handle the high number of component variants, frequent model upgradation and complexity of shapes. The resulting consistency in quality of the aluminium components has more than satisfied the criteria Grind Master required: “Robotic deflashing is a transformation of the foundry and human lives therein, by creating a hazard-free, safe and healthy work environment, delivering high quality parts and matching global manufacturing practices. With the success of the first two deflashing robots, we would like to proceed with automation of the entire foundry with robots for this operation,” says Sameer Kelkar.
