REFILLS is working on a robotics solution to automate four classic logistics steps that can be found in almost every retail store.

Modern automation in retail stores such as supermarkets - apart from simple waste pressing systems or bottle deposit machines - is hardly available. The EU-funded research project REFILLS wants to change this. Together with renowned robotics partners, KUKA and SWISSLOG are working on a robotics solution to automate four classic logistics steps that can be found in almost every retail store.
"At Amazon in the logistics warehouse or even in the back room of a pharmacy, you will see automated processes. We want to approach this vision", says Klaus Miller, the project manager. A mobile robot system with the characteristics of a modular system will be used. The central unit, a flat transport carrier, can link up with various other robot modules and process these logistics steps. After the initial scanning of the inventory and the storage of product data, incoming goods can be pre-sorted into product categories and transported in portions to the corresponding shelves. The subsequent filling of the shelf is solved in the first step with a collaborating robot system. Excess goods are autonomously returned to the warehouse. In the last step, the REFILL(s) process, i.e. refilling, is carried out from there.
