IoC – Internet of Construction

The IoC project is investigating how robots can support the booming construction industry. Read here about KUKA's contribution to this project.

Robots in the construction industry

The construction industry is booming like never before. On-time delivery and construction quality are two aspects that must not be neglected. The IoC project,  funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), aims to improve precisely these two aspects with the help of a continuous flow of information from building planning to the pre-fabrication of modules all the way to construction.

Within the IoC project, KUKA is dedicated to implementing individual robotics solutions in the construction industry. These include, for example, mobile robots for use in pre-fabrication in the construction industry.

The successful use of robots in a project can only succeed if complex robot systems no longer need to be programmed in a robot-centric way, but the robot movement is largely derived automatically from the existing digital data. For this purpose, KUKA is developing new methods that translate task descriptions such as process paths into robot movements and tool controls.

A further sub-goal of KUKA is to consider additional sensors in path planning and execution in order to improve accuracy, flexibility and convertibility. This is because mobile robot systems generally offer greater flexibility, but often at the sacrifice of accuracy. The IoC project is therefore researching and developing methods to increase these accuracies with the help of additional sensor technology.
