Catonator – A pioneering innovation in the construction industry

A remote-controlled robotic saw that is revolutionising rock and concrete cutting.

Robotised saw on truck

Smart Production, in collaboration with contractor Sørheim Riveservice, has developed a remote-controlled robotic saw that revolutionises work in rock and concrete cutting. The catonator, which is based on a Kuka robot, FORTEC KR 480 Ultra, is equipped with a powerful spindle for saw blades from 1000-2000 mm, enabling efficient cutting in both rock and reinforced concrete.

Efficiency and environmental sustainability

This technological solution has proved extremely effective, with rigging, implementation and demobilisation significantly reduced.
In many cases, it has been chosen over conventional methods such as blasting and bending, methods that are often time-consuming and cause major disruption. The catonator is fully electrically powered via a high-performance battery module, making it 100% CO₂ emission-free. In addition to reducing negative environmental impacts, the solution improves the working environment by eliminating noise and exhaust fumes from diesel generators - a major advance in sustainable construction technology.

Adaptable for more tasks

Like other construction machines, the Catonator can be equipped with drilling and bending tools, further increasing its flexibility on the jobsite. The operator controls the robot and other parts of the system via a wireless remote control, where the operator can choose between pre-programmed sequences and direct execution of robot movements from joysticks. The control panel is custom-built for the project but communicates with the robot via a standard KUKA interface, the RobotSensorInterface (RSI)
With its versatility and high capacity, it has become a preferred solution for contractors seeking efficiency and precision in their projects. Smart Production, based in Bergen, is a full-service provider of robotic solutions for industry. Over the past month, together with our partner and supplier Bekas, we have completed the final details to further optimise the system. With the Catonator, we are taking a big step towards a more sustainable, efficient and future-proof construction industry.

It is very interesting for me as a salesperson to be involved in projects outside of what we work with on a daily basis. I think the potential can be great in an industry which until now has not used robots.
