Sustainability is more than just environmental protection—it should reduce costs, improve processes, and create competitive advantages. Examples from our international sites show how investments in green technologies pay off.

Shunde: Solar Power Cuts Energy Costs and Increases Independence

In Shunde, China, KUKA has transformed the roofs of its production halls into solar power plants. Massive photovoltaic systems generate millions of kilowatt-hours of green electricity each year, which is used not only internally. Surpluses are fed into the public grid. The result: significantly lower energy costs and less dependence on external electricity providers.

2024 figures:

  • More than 6 million kWh of electricity were generated, saving more than 770 tons of coal.
  • Nearly 230 tons of CO₂ were also saved—a win for both the environment and the bottom line.

Water Treatment: Using Resources Multiple Times

The same facility also takes a smart approach to water. Previously, wastewater from cleaning components had to be disposed of at high cost. Today, a modern distillation system allows 90 percent of the water to be reused. This not only saves costs for fresh water and disposal but also reduces hazardous waste and conserves resources.

Taksony and Füzesgyarmat: Energy Efficiency Projects and Process Optimization for Tangible Cost Benefits

Sustainability is also a top priority in Hungary—with real economic success. The relocation and optimization of cable production to the newly built Hall 6 in Füzesgyarmat was a major effort that paid off: By streamlining processes, returning rented spaces and containers, and making better use of existing capacity, annual cost savings in the six-figure euro range because containers and additional spaces could be phased out. Production runs more efficiently, the workforce is harmonized, and customer expectations are met with less effort.

Sustainability not only has environmental benefits, but also economic ones.

Additionally, numerous energy efficiency projects have been implemented at the two Hungarian sites, Taksony and Füzesgyarmat. From solar power to heat pumps and the use of waste heat from compressors and paint shop, energy is being saved everywhere — resulting in significant cost reductions. Many of these measures pay for themselves within a few years and deliver five- to six-figure savings every year. Installing EV charging stations and better insulation of pipelines also help lower operating costs and reduce CO₂ emissions.

Augsburg: Making the Fleet and Infrastructure Sustainable and Economically Sensible

At our headquarters in Augsburg, we are already implementing numerous sustainable measures and projects—and new ones are continuously being added. These include switching our vehicle fleet to electric mobility as well as designing our infrastructure sustainably, like e.g. expanding our photovoltaic systems. This is how we actively shape the future—at all our locations worldwide. Sustainability pays off.

In Augsburg, too, solar power systems are just one of many sustainability initiatives
