What does AMR mean in robotics?

What is the difference between AMR and AGV?

AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) follow predefined routes using physical guides such as magnetic strips, wires, or markers.

AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robot) operate differently. Using SLAM technology, LiDAR, cameras, and sensor fusion, they create digital maps, determine their position in real time, and dynamically select the most efficient route. When obstacles appear, they can reroute instead of stopping and waiting.

As manufacturing and warehouse environments become more dynamic, many companies are evaluating whether AGVs or AMRs are the better choice for their automation strategy. The right solution depends on factors such as flexibility, facility layout, scalability, traffic complexity, and operational requirements.

What is SLAM in mobile robotics?

SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) is a navigation technology that enables autonomous mobile robots to simultaneously create a digital map of their environment and determine their position within that map in real time.

Using LiDAR, cameras, and advanced sensor fusion, SLAM continuously analyzes the robot’s surroundings to identify landmarks, detect obstacles, and calculate the most efficient route. This allows AMRs to navigate safely and autonomously without relying on fixed infrastructure such as magnetic strips or floor markers.

As layouts change, SLAM-based robots can adapt dynamically, making them ideal for manufacturing, warehouse automation, and other environments with evolving workflows and material flows.

How do mobile robots detect obstacles and operate safely around people?

Safety is a core principle of human-robot collaboration (HRC) at KUKA. Our autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are specifically designed to operate safely alongside people in dynamic manufacturing and warehouse environments. To prevent collisions and ensure reliable operation, AMR robots incorporate multiple layers of advanced safety technology:

  • Laser scanners and 3D cameras: Front and rear safety laser scanners continuously monitor the surroundings and reliably detect people and obstacles. Optional 3D cameras can identify elevated objects such as forklift forks, pallets, or overhanging loads, helping to prevent collisions with objects outside the scanner's detection plane.

  • Reduced speed and audible warning when reversing: To enhance safety in shared workspaces, AMRs automatically reduce their speed and emit an audible warning signal whenever they travel in reverse.

  • 4 Emergency Stop buttons: Four Emergency Stop buttons are positioned around the vehicle, allowing operators to immediately halt the robot in any emergency situation.

  • Audible alarms and visual signal lights: Configurable acoustic alarms and signal lights provide clear status information and alert nearby personnel to robot movement, operating conditions, or safety-related events.

  • Intelligent obstacle avoidance: Using LiDAR, cameras, and real-time navigation software, AMR robots continuously analyze their environment. When an obstacle is detected, the robot can automatically slow down, stop, or calculate an alternative route to safely continue its mission.

By combining advanced sensors, intelligent navigation, and certified safety systems, KUKA AMRs enable safe and efficient human-robot collaboration while maintaining uninterrupted material flow in manufacturing, warehouse, and intralogistics operations.

How do you integrate AMR into existing enterprise systems (WMS, ERP, or MES)?

What navigation technology do autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) use?

AMR robots use the SLAM method (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) for autonomous navigation. Using sensor fusion, data from LiDAR sensors, laser scanners, cameras, and onboard navigation systems is combined in real time to determine the robot's position, create digital maps, detect obstacles, and optimize routes.

If required, KUKA AMRs can also use hybrid navigation. In this mode, additional QR codes placed on the floor are scanned by onboard cameras to support navigation and precise positioning. This approach is particularly effective in environments with changing conditions or applications that require high positioning accuracy.

What are the environmental requirements for AMR?

No magnetic strips or floor guides are required for the use of AMRs. The vehicles navigate using sensors and create digital maps of their surroundings. They require sufficient travel paths, charging and handoff stations, a network connection, and an environment suitable for navigation. Layout changes can usually be integrated flexibly.

How efficient and long-lasting are the batteries of the mobile robots?

We use high-quality lithium-ion batteries in our mobile robots. These batteries are characterized by an outstanding service life.

  • Lithium batteries can go through thousands of charging cycles before their capacity decreases noticeably.

  • Beyond this, we use inductive charging technology, which further increases durability and simultaneously ensures high resistance to water and dust.

A further advantage of our mobile robots is their exceptionally short charging time of less than 2 hours and a high charging rate that supports up to 8 hours of operation.

How do I correctly and efficiently commission an AMR robot?

KUKA offers technicians a structured and practical introduction to commissioning AMR robots. Specially developed training videos help you to implement all relevant steps safely and efficiently – from unboxing and commissioning to safety checks and basic operation. This shortens the commissioning time, avoids typical errors, and ensures the safe and smooth operation of your autonomous vehicle.

What training is required to operate and maintain mobile robots?
