Augsburg, February 28, 2012 – Plant engineering builder and integrator KUKA Systems received an order from premium automaker Volvo Car Corporation for a new assembly line at the Gothenburg automotive plant

den 28 februari 2012

The new line is to be integrated without shutting down the existing operation. The order was placed in January 2012 and gives KUKA turnkey project responsibility for the new Volvo S60 model.

In addition to the engineering for the complete line, the Augsburg-based automation specialist will be responsible for developing and building new jigs and fixtures and grippers to assemble the side panels, doors, hood and trunk lid of the new premium-class sedan. The contract also includes the extension of the framing station to produce the body-in-white for the new model. Industrial robots will be used to automate the entire line. The processes involved here are spot welding, adhesive application and handling tasks, together with arc welding and bolt torquing on the body-in-white. KUKA expects to complete the project by October 2012.

“The specialty of this contract is that KUKA Systems has to install and commission the equipment on a very tight schedule during ongoing production. This demonstrates anew that KUKA Systems has at its fingertips the expertise to deliver flexible automation solutions,” says Dr. Till Reuter, CEO of KUKA AG.
